As we know, every person, whether man or woman, is required to cover their ‘awra (the parts of the body that must always be concealed from view). Indeed, Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, tells us: «O children of Adam, wear your adornment (your clothing) in every place of prayer. […]» (Surah 7, verse 31).

• Clothing must cover the area between the navel and the knees. It is also recommended to cover the torso and the area between the knees and the middle of the shin. Clothing must not extend beyond the ankles: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told us, «Whatever is below the two ankles is in the Fire.»
• Clothing must not be see-through in a way that reveals the parts that should be covered
• It must not reveal the contours of private parts
• It must not contain silk or gold, for ‘Ali reported that the Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wa salam) took some silk in his right hand and some gold in his left, then said: «These two things are forbidden to the men of my community.» Reported by Abu Dawud, al-Nasa’i, and Ahmad
• A man’s attire should not resemble that of women, for Ibn ‘Abbas reported: «The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa salam) cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men. » (Bukhari)
• It must not resemble the attire of the unbelievers, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, «Whoever imitates a people is one of them.» Abu Dawud
• Finally, the best attire is white clothing, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, «Wear white clothing, for it is the best, and use it as a shroud.» Abu Dawud
